Susanne Grønlund’s Danish-inspired product designs are irresistible for parents and little ones alike. Get an inside look behind her design thought process and what inspires her.
Q1: How did you get into furniture design? Specifically baby/children’s design?
“Before design school, I worked with children and am fascinated with their world. They’re so open-minded and explore with curiosity. At the same time, they need care. A enjoyable childhood leads to a better future—the impact of our first years are long-lasting.”
Q2: Who/what are your biggest influencers when it comes to baby/children’s furniture?
"My six grandchildren, who are ages 1-8 years old (and their parents)."
Q3: How does having your own children influence the products you design for other parents?
"It has a significant influence. It’s very difficult to learn how to parent without having tried it yourself, and depending on others’ input and experiences for design doesn’t always cut it."
Q4: Why do you think the design of The Chair resonates with so many parents?
"Modestly speaking, the design is appealing and easy to understand. It suits homes where the focus is already on the design and simplicity. Then, there’s the functionality—it’s easy to clean, lightweight, and can be used as a high chair and kid seat."
Q5: How do you think baby/children’s product design has changed from when you first had children to now? What do you think it will be like 10 years from now?
"We have a better understanding of childhood in general, and the market is seeing more and better products surrounding it. It’s getting competitive! In many countries, family sizes are getting smaller, which might give families more resources to spend on their children. I predict this tendency will be even stronger in the future, especially if the workplace makes strides in helping working parents."
